  • Chris Thile - How To Grow A Woman From the Ground - CD
    Item #: NCCD20
At 25, Chris Thile has accomplished more than most -- 2 million albums sold with Grammy-winning Nickel Creek, six solo albums (the first at the age of 12), a side career as an in-demand studio musician, and collaborations with Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck and Jon Brion. But ultimately, moving to New York was the catalyst that reminded Thile as to how and why he started playing the mandolin in the first place. And, it’s where he brought together a new-generation bluegrass band to record How To Grow A Woman From The Ground to be released on Sugar Hill September 12, 2006.

Thile called upon a cadre of similarly accomplished, young and talented friends to build the band -- Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge and Greg Garrison. They camped out in his one bedroom apartment in weeklong rehearsal and writing sessions. With Thile as the producer, the five recorded the album in live takes around a pair of microphones at famed Sear Sound Recording Studios.

How To Grow A Woman From The Ground is a raw mix of original compositions, and inventive takes from disparate sources such as The White Stripes, Jimmie Rodgers, and Gillian Welch. “I had the record sequenced and planned before we went in,” says Thile. “I saw a challenge in trying to tell at least a subconsciously coherent story.”

  • Chris Thile - Deceiver - CD
    Item #: NCCD16
    Release Date: 2004

DECEIVER is quite a departure from the blistering instrumental bluegrass-esque leanings he cut his teeth on as a mandolin wunderkind. DECEIVER also takes a bold, new route away from his subsequent solo work that featured his jazz/classical/progressive acoustic-style. In fact, DECEIVER is the first Thile solo project to feature vocals, and only includes two instrumentals ("palette cleansers"). This album, exploring a rock direction, is the logical next step in the maturation of an artist who clearly heeds no boundaries and knows no limitations.

Taking inspiration from sources as diverse as a Pulitzer prize-winning novel ("Empire Falls") and his first encounter with his now-wife ("Wrong Idea"), Thile's voice emerges as a distinct style within the contemporary musical landscape. Very serious about his solo work, DECEIVER is not to be confused as a fun side-project from his full-time band but, rather, an artist releasing the music bursting within him. Thile played EVERY instrument (drums, guitars, keyboards, strings, etc.) on the album and was intimately involved in the recording and production process, as well. Clearly a harbinger of things to come from this unique and phenomenally talented artist.

Also available as a SACD - Super Audio CDs require a format-specific player to utilize their dramatic increase in sound quality, however, all Sugar Hill SACDs are formatted with a second layer (known commonly as hybrid SACDs), allowing them to be played on standard CD Audio players, as well.

Super Audio CD offers a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range, increasing resolution by more closely following the original wave form of the music, which results in music reproduction that is remarkably pure and faithful to the original.

SACD multi-channel sound versions contain as many as six separate channels. Some will use the added channels to faithfully reproduce the precise acoustic signature of the performance space. Others will realize new creative possibilities, immersing the listener in a 360° field of sound. Multi-channel SACD takes its place beside stereo SACD as another compelling way to enjoy music.
